Many people have wondered if the United States is mentioned in Bible prophesy. The short answer is yes. Those of us who say America is in the Bible point to the following passages: Isaiah 49:1-6, Isaiah 51:5, Isaiah 60:9, Isaiah 66:19, Jeremiah 31:10, and Ezekiel 38:10-13 and 39:6. I am going to review some of these passages with you, so that you can come to your own conclusions. Please read the whole article.
Starting with a careful examination of Isaiah 49:1-6 [Listen, O Isles, to Me; and hearken, you people from far…]. It is clear the message is for the Isles, it is not for Isaiah or Israel. Then Isaiah begins to identify himself as the messenger to the Isles: [The Lord hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother has He made mention of my name. And He has made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of His hand has He hid me, and made me a polished shaft; in His quiver has He hid me; And said to me, you are my servant, O Israel, in whom I will be glorified. Then I said, I have labored in vain, I have spent my strength for nothing, and in vain; yet surely my judgment is with the Lord, and my work with God. And now, said the Lord that formed me from the womb to be His servant, to bring Jacob again to Him, Though Israel be not gathered, yet shall I [Isaiah] be glorious in the eyes of the Lord, and my God shall be my strength…Isaiah 49:1-5.] Isaiah speaks lamenting that he has labored in vain, he spent his strength for nothing, his warnings to the Israelites to change their ways have failed. Although he has failed, it is not his fault. He remains glorious in the eyes of the Lord. His work with God will yet be rewarded. Isaiah also says Israel is not yet gathered. History shows that Israel was restored in 1948, and many Jewish people were gathered back to Israel, their rightful homeland, in the years that followed and continuing to this day.
Then Isaiah delivers the message to the Isles: [And He said, It is a light thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel; I will also give you as a light to the Gentiles, that you may be My salvation unto the end of the earth. Isaiah 49:6.] Isaiah clearly states that he has not been able to accomplish these things through no fault of his own. Isaiah is clearly a servant of the Lord, but the message was to a different servant of the Lord, “The Isles”. That servant was to perform three distinct tasks.
The first was to help: [restore the preserved of Israel.]
The second was: [to be My salvation unto the end of the earth.]
Thirdly, the Lord also said this country from afar (the Isles) would be given by Him: [for a light to the Gentiles.] So now we have to do research to find out what country successfully completed those three tasks. In Scripture all directions and compass references originate from His land, the land of Israel. In Strong’s Concordance: the word Isles is translated from Hebrew to mean; a habitable spot, as desirable; a coast; an island. The U.S. has nearly 13,000 miles of coastline, and no one can deny that it is a desirable, habitable place to live. So America meets all of these requirements including being far from Israel, not just in distance, but in “time” also.
The Isles were given three tasks:
Task number 1 for the Isles: was to help restore the preserved of Israel. The desire of the Jewish people to return to their rightful homeland dates all the way back to their captivity in Babylon from 586 B.C. to 516 B.C., and after the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans in A.D. 70, when they were dispersed among the nations. Not much progress was made until 1917 when the British government issued a statement called the Balfour Declaration, which favored the establishment of a Jewish homeland in Palestine. After World War 1, the League of Nations ratified the Declaration and appointed Britain to rule Palestine in 1922. Jewish hopes were high and some Jews were allowed to migrate to Palestine amid Arab opposition. But in 1939, Britain issued a “White Paper” restricting further Jewish immigration to Palestine. The Jews, feeling betrayed, bitterly opposed the policy and turned to the United States for help. But the United States entered World War II in 1941.
After the war, with sympathy for the Jewish people widespread because of the horrors of the Holocaust, Britain and the United States began a joint effort to examine the problem. When Harry Truman became president he made clear that his sympathies were with the Jews and accepted the ideas of the Balfour Declaration. But the U.S. State department was opposed to the idea of a Jewish homeland because they recognized the threat from the growing Soviet-Arab connection, and the possible interruption of oil supplies from the Middle East.
In 1946, a joint U.S.-British committee recommended that the United Nations establish a trusteeship that would create two autonomous states, one for the Jews, and one for the Palestinians. It became known as the “Partition Plan”. On November 29, 1947 the U.N. General Assembly passed the partition plan. The plan established three entities in Palestine, a Jewish state, an Arab state, and an international zone around Jerusalem. At midnight on May 14, 1948, the Provisional Government of Israel, proclaimed the new state of Israel. President Truman recognized the new state of Israel 11 minutes later. In a statement prepared ahead of time he had written the words “the Jewish state” then crossed them out and wrote “Israel”.
United States support for the partition plan was critical to the creation of the state of Israel. President Truman had made clear his support for the Zionist cause prior to World War II. President Truman wrote in his memoirs, “ The question of Palestine as a Jewish homeland goes back to the solemn promise that had been made to the Jews by the British in the Balfour Declaration of 1917, a promise which stirred the hopes and dreams of these oppressed people. This promise, I felt, should be kept, just as all promises made by responsible, civilized governments should be kept.” In a 1947 poll, 65% of the American people supported the partition plan.
After Nazi atrocities against the Jews came to light during the war, then Senator Harry Truman, said in Chicago in 1944; “ Today, not tomorrow, we must do all that is humanly possible to provide a haven for all those who can be grasped from the hands of the Nazi butchers. Free lands must be opened to them [the Jews].”
President Harry Truman, played such an important role in the establishment of the new state of Israel, that the first secretary general of the United Nations stated, “ I think we can safely say that if there had been no Harry Truman, there would be no Israel today.”
But it wasn’t just President Truman who helped, there were many American people who were essential to the establishment of the new state of Israel. In 1999, director Jerry Levine was the winner of an Emmy award for Best Documentary. The title of the documentary was, “Israel’s Forgotten Heroes”. The documentary was a tribute to the American men and women, Jews and non-Jews, who actively helped in the creation of the State of Israel, from 1945 to 1949. The story provides firsthand accounts from Americans who went to Israel and helped fight for Israel’s independence, or aided Israel by providing weapons and aircraft. Many of these people were veterans of World War II, or Americans who were affected by the plight of Holocaust survivors and wanted to help ensure that a Jewish homeland was established.
President Truman stated in a speech on October 28, 1948; “It is my responsibility to see that our policy in Israel fits in with our policy throughout the world; second, it is my desire to help build in Palestine a strong, prosperous, free and independent democratic state. It must be large enough, and strong enough to make it’s people self-supporting and secure.” After Israel’s war of independence in 1948, President Truman provided Israel with a loan of $135 million to help repatriate Jews from around the world, back to Israel.
Since the end of WW II, Israel has received more direct aid from the U.S. than any other country. Through 2007, Israel has received over $105 billion in American assistance. Task number 1 for the Isles was accomplished on May 14th, 1948.
Task number 2 for the Isles: was to be given as a “light” to the Gentiles. The United States was founded on the principles of Freedom, Justice, and Liberty for all. Not just in this country, but around the world we have defended these principles, and fought for those people that called on us for help. The original name for the Statue of Liberty was “Liberty Enlightening the World”. The torch the statue holds in its hand is symbolic of a beacon of light to the world, and stands now as a symbol for what this country has done for all those we have saved from tyranny. Presidents Kennedy and Ronald Reagan, both, were fond of calling this country a “Thousand Points of Light”, and a “Beacon of Hope” for the entire world. President Obama recently echoed those same sentiments. Whenever there is distress anywhere in the world, the United States is there to provide assistance. Currently the United States has over 300,000 troops, stationed in 155 countries around the world, defending freedom. Task number 2 for the Isles is on-going.
Task number 3 for the Isles: was to be the Lord’s Salvation to the ends of the earth. No other country in history has sent more Christian missionaries around the world than the United States. After WW II, 150 missionary agencies were formed in the United States. Christian leaders envisioned a missionary arrangement where the message would be thoroughly Biblical. The Christian Missionary Fellowship was incorporated in Kansas in 1949. The chartered purpose of this new mission agency was to, “Evangelize the non-Christian people of the world.” About 90% of the money for overseas Evangelism comes from the United States. Task number 3 for the Isles is on-going.
No other country comes close to accomplishing just one of those tasks. The United States however, meets all three of these tasks pretty much exclusively. I believe God raised up America to not only help restore the nation of Israel, but since then we have also served as a defender of Israel. The United States is the only military ally that Israel has. I also believe that God has blessed the United States because of all we have done for Israel. [And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse them that curse thee. Genesis 12:3].
A few verses down in chapter 49 of the book of Isaiah we find this verse:
[Thus saith the Lord God, behold, I will lift up mine hand to the Gentiles, and set up My Standard to the people; and they shall bring thy sons in their arms, and thy daughters shall be carried upon their shoulders. Isaiah 49:22].
Okay, now we have to do more research. On May 14, 1948 the Provisional Government of the new nation of Israel, in their Proclamation of the State of Israel, made this opening statement: “The State of Israel will be open for Jewish immigration and the ingathering of the exiles”. Now we have to ask, what group of Gentiles did He lift His hand up to, and to what group of Gentiles did He set up His standard, and which group of Gentiles would carry Israels’ sons and daughters in their arms and on their shoulders?
From 1973 through 1991, the U.S. government provided over $450 million dollars in grant money to Israel for the resettlement of Jewish immigrants back to Israel. Then with the breakup of the former Soviet Union in 1991 the U.S. government increased resettlement grants from $30 million annually to $80 million annually. These resettlement grants have totaled over $1.5 billion dollars. In addition to grant money from the U.S. government, the Christians in America have also contributed generously to organizations that provide money and assistance to bring the Jewish people back to their rightful homeland. One of those organizations, The International Fellowship of Christians and Jews (IFCJ.ORG) receives 100% of its donations from the U.S. and Canada for the “Wings of Eagles” program, which provides money and assistance to Jews still living in the countries of the former Soviet Union for immigration back to Israel. Many of these poor Jewish people because of persecution, discrimination, age, and disease from lack of proper medical care literally had to be carried aboard the ships and planes that would bring them back to Israel. Can you see now why God has blessed America?
Now lets take a look at these words from the prophet Jeremiah: [Hear the word of the Lord, O ye nations, and declare it in the Isles, afar off, and say, He that scattered Israel will gather him…Jeremiah 31:10]. There’s that word (Isles) again, and it is associated again with being (afar off). Now lets travel afar off in time and distance and take a look at history. In 1948 when the nation of Israel was born, serious students of prophesy across America declared that this was the fulfillment of Biblical prophesy. There were also scholars in Canada and Great Britain that also made the same declaration. Since 1948 hundreds, perhaps thousands of books with themes of Biblical prophesy have been published. Tens of millions of copies of those books have been sold, thus fulfilling Jeremiahs prophesy. Most of those books would not have been written had it not been for the events of May 14, 1948. Most of the authors of these books say America is not in the Bible. That’s because they stumbled over the verses of Isaiah 49:1-6, not doing the research, instead saying it only deals with Israel. From there you cannot make the connection to America in any other verse. They haven’t even recognized that they themselves were fulfilling the prophesy of Jeremiah 31:10.
Many of the authors of books that deal with Biblical prophesy point to these verses: [Thus says the Lord God; I will even gather you from the people, and assemble you out of the countries where you have been scattered, and I will give you the land of Israel. Son of Man, behold, they of the house of Israel say, the vision that he sees is for many days to come, and that He prophesies of the times that are far off. Ezekiel 11:17, 12:27]. The Lord promised He would give to the house of Israel, the land of Israel, but it would not be for many days, that are far off. This is an “end time” prophesy that was fulfilled in 1948 with the birth of the nation of Israel.
Two more verses that prophesied the birth of the nation of Israel:
[I will accept you with your sweet savor, when I bring you out from among the people, and gather you out of the countries wherein you have been scattered: and I will be sanctified in you before the heathen. And you shall know that I am the Lord, when I shall bring you into the land of Israel, into the country for which I lifted up My hand to give it to your fathers. Ezekiel 20:41-42].
[And you shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; and you shall be My people, and I will be your God. And they shall say, this land that was desolate is become like the Garden of Eden; and the waste and desolate and ruined cities are become fenced, and are inhabited. Ezekiel 36:28-35].
Let’s take a look at Isaiah 51:5 [My righteousness is near; My salvation is gone forth, and Mine arms shall judge the people; the Isles shall wait upon Me, and on Mine arm shall they trust.]. The only people waiting patiently for Christ’s return are Christians. Although there are Christians living in nearly every country around the world, this is especially true of coastal countries such as America, Canada, England, Australia, and New Zealand. We cannot say the Isles mentioned in this passage refers exclusively to the U.S. but we do have the highest number and percentage of true Bible believing Christians of all of them, and we are the only staunch military ally of Israel.
Please take note of the following verses:
[All nations before Him are as nothing; and they are counted to Him as less than nothing, and vanity. Isaiah 40:17]
[To whom then will you liken God? Or what likeness will you compare to Him? Isaiah 40:18].
What these verses are saying is that compared to God and His Kingdom, the nations and kings of this earth are as nothing, just the vanity of men. The Apostle Paul eloquently said: [No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love Him. 1 Corinthians 2:9].
Now please take note of these verses:
[For the nation and kingdom that will not serve Thee, shall perish; yea, those nations shall be utterly wasted. Isaiah 60:12]
[Behold, the nations are as a drop of a bucket and are counted as the small dust of the balance; behold, He taketh up the Isles as a very little thing. Isaiah 40:15]
Notice the Lord states that any nation that does not serve the Lord shall utterly be wasted.
Notice that when He taketh up the Isles, He considers it a small thing.
Ezekiel 38:10-12
[Thus saith the Lord God; it shall also come to pass, that at the same time shall things come into thy mind, and you shall think an evil thought. And you shall say, I will go up to the land of unwalled villages; I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates. To take a spoil, and to take a prey; to turn thine hand upon the desolate places that are now inhabited, and upon the people that are gathered out of the nations, which have gotten cattle and goods, that dwell in the midst of the land. Ezekiel 38:10-12].
If you read Ezekiel verses 38:1-9, you will find that the invasion of Israel is already underway. Then in verse 38:10 you find these words: [it shall also come to pass]. What those words say to me is; (in addition to the invasion of Israel) something else is going to happen. Gog thinks an evil thought. Gog is going up to a land of [unwalled villages, without walls, neither bars nor gates]. This is not describing Israel. In fact we find in Ezekiel 36: 35 that Israels’ [cities are become fenced]. You can google Israels’ Security Wall that separates Israel from the Palestinian territory. The wall is 12 feet high in most places. There are 40 miles of security wall around parts of Jerusalem. In all there are plans to extend the wall for another 60 miles to Carmel and surround 10 settlements including Gush Etzion. The IDF can be seen patrolling streets in the cities of Israel. Armored buses carry passengers. Streets are blocked off occasionally because of Palestinian riots. Armed soldiers at the entrance to airports. Is Israel at rest, or dwelling safely? Since 1948 Israel has never been at rest. They have fought wars for their very survival in 1948, 1956, 1967 and in 1973. The president of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has sworn to wipe Israel off the map and is pursuing nuclear weapons. To the north in Lebanon, the terrorist group Hezbollah has 40,000 rockets that can strike deep inside Israel. In Gaza, the terrorist group Hamas is well armed, and has fired more than 8,000 crude rockets into Israel since 2005. This hardly describes Israel as a country that is at rest and dwelling safely.
Ezekiel 38:14
[Therefore, son of man, prophesy and say unto Gog, Thus says the Lord God; In that day when My people of Israel dwelleth safely, shall thou not know it? Ezekiel 38:14]. What the Lord is saying is that Israel is dwelling safely because of His Divine protection. The atheistic leaders of Russia do not know of the Divine protection of Israel because they do not know the Lord and the Bible.
Ezekiel 38:10-12 describes America perfectly. America has no such security wall, our cities are not fenced, we are a people gathered out of the countries, a melting pot. At the time of this prophesy 2600 years ago, the land that exists as America today was desolate and virtually uninhabited. In Americas’ rich history, cattle ranching has played a vital role as a food source for its’ people, and as an export commodity. Also the words that these people: [dwell in the midst of the land] perfectly describes Americas’ geographic location sitting in the middle of the continent from coast to coast.
Israel is mentioned 18 times in these two chapters. The Lord uses the phrase [My people of Israel] three times in these verses 38:14, 38:21, and 39:7. In verse 38:12 He says [upon the people]. That is because Ezekiel 38:10-12 is describing another country, “The Isles”.
Most prophesy scholars, like Grant Jeffrey, John Hagee, even Hal Lindsey and a host of others have assumed that Ezekiel 38:10-12 must be referring to Israel. At the same time they admit that much of it does not fit Israel because of the reasons I have stated above. I am not criticizing them. What I am saying is that we need to reopen the discussion of whether America is in the Bible. Most of them have done an amazing job of interpreting the prophesies: see my links page. My favorite author, Hal Lindsey, recently stated; “ The prophets are infallible, but interpreters are”. Nearly all of them have said America is not in the Bible. I beg to differ.
Because most have stumbled over Isaiah 49:1-6 and Ezekiel 38:10-12, they have also stumbled over this verse: [And I will send a fire on Magog (Russia), and among them that dwell carelessly in the Isles (America): and they shall know that I am the Lord. Ezekiel 39:6].
I believe “This is Americas Fate During the Tribulation Period”. This is a picture of nuclear war between Russia and the United States, and probably some or all of our strongest allies, Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Which of these allies will be involved I don’t know. This will take place at the same time of the Russian/Iranian led invasion of Israel in the latter days, that God prophesied through His servant, Ezekiel. This war will take place after the Rapture of the Church, during the very beginning of the Tribulation Period. Ezekiel's war coincides with the “four horsemen of the apocalypse”, and the opening of the first 4 seals in Revelation chapter 6. The Tribulation Period is about to come upon an unbelieving, unrepentant world.
[For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. Matthew 24:21].
One Possible Scenario
The invasion described by Ezekiel is so massive, it includes the Russian army, and nearly every Muslim country in the Middle East, with the exceptions of Egypt and Jordan, both of which have peace treaties with Israel. It is so large it is described as a [cloud to cover the land]. I think something must happen to trigger this massive invasion. The Bible doesn’t give us those details. There is one possible scenario that could lead to this massive invasion. That scenario could be a brief but brutal war. If Israel were to strike Irans’ nuclear facilities in a pre-emptive attack it would quickly involve other countries. Syria and Lebanon would almost immediately go to war with Israel. Iran has already threatened to strike U.S. interests in the Persian Gulf if Israel does this. That includes shipping in the Persian Gulf, and the Saudi oil fields, along with a possible attack against U.S. forces already in the region. The U.S. would have no choice but to retaliate. This war lasts about two weeks. The Russians may or may not involve their troops, but is still preparing for war. During those weeks the whole world is calling for peace and a cease fire. There is a cease fire, and fighting stops for a few days, but during the lull in fighting, Russia and the Muslim countries are preparing for a final assault on Israel. The antichrist is preparing a Middle East peace treaty. The Lord calls this peace treaty: […a covenant with death…Isaiah 28:18]. The peace treaty is a doublecross. The day this peace treaty is confirmed by the antichrist, and is signed by the combatants. The antichrist gives the OK to start the invasion. The invasion as described by Ezekiel begins. It is the beginning of the Tribulation Period. But the Church has already been Raptured.
